Dan Blocker was born on December 10, 1928, to Ora “Shack” Blocker and Mary Arizona Blocker in De Kalb, Bowe County, Texas. He was raised as a Free Methodist in Texas. He attended the Texas Military Institute in San Antonio, Texas, USA. Dan played football for Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene, Texas, affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention.
